Raymond Reddington opens the season as Katarina Rostova’s captive. After he escapes, she moves into Liz’s building under the name Maddie. Liz believes her new neighbour is a helpful friend and trusts her around Agnes. Katarina uses that access to search for the truth about Red and the people who framed and pursued her. When Liz comes to believe her neighbour is her mother, she struggles to reconcile Katarina’s affection with the danger surrounding her. Red’s attempts to protect Liz’s grandfather Dom deepen the conflict, and the task force keeps investigating Blacklisters as the family dispute grows around them.
Katarina’s men attack Dom’s house and shoot him; Francesca performs emergency surgery while Liz and Ressler bring the survivors to safety. Later, Dembe’s imam is kidnapped to force him to disclose Red’s secrets. Red’s own failing health makes him consider passing his criminal empire to Liz, but she still wants answers about his past and her family. In the shortened season’s finale, the task force investigates accountant Frank Merwin and the Kazanjian brothers while Liz confronts both Red and Katarina over their lies. With Dom gravely ill, she chooses to side with the woman she believes is her mother and pursue the truth even if it means opposing Red.
