Joyce refuses to accept that the body recovered from the quarry is Will. Hopper urges her to visit the morgue, drawing on his own experience of losing a child, but she insists that the lights and the creature were real. Mike also believes Will is dead until Eleven brings his singing through a radio. The boys disguise her with a wig and Nancy's clothes so they can use the stronger radio at school. After a memorial assembly, Eleven makes contact again. They hear Will speaking to Joyce, who sees him through a strange membrane behind the wallpaper. The connection closes before she can reach him, and her axe opens only an ordinary hole through the wall.
Nancy brings Jonathan the damaged photograph from Steve's party and describes the figure she saw in the woods. Her description matches Joyce's account. An enlarged print reveals a creature behind Barb, giving them a reason to investigate together. Hopper questions the state trooper who reported finding Will and discovers that the recovery was arranged. He then forces his way into the morgue to examine the supposed corpse himself. Cutting it open reveals cotton stuffing beneath the skin. The child Hawkins has begun mourning is a fabricated body. Hopper heads back to the laboratory fence with bolt cutters, while Joyce's former husband Lonnie arrives at the house.
