Season two opens with the tornado aftermath: Clark saves Lana, Jonathan and Roger Nixon are trapped, and Lex is left in a wrecked mansion with Lionel. Clark’s abilities continue to emerge, including heat vision, while the Kents try to contain the danger around his spacecraft. Pete discovers the ship and Clark decides to tell him the truth, making Pete the first of Clark’s close school friends to know. Their new trust is tested when Clark’s behavior changes under red kryptonite. Meanwhile, caves near town connect the meteor shower to an older history, and Clark learns from Dr. Virgil Swann that his birthplace is Krypton and his birth name is Kal-El.
The cave and the spacecraft begin to answer Clark’s questions, but Jor-El’s voice brings a demand: Clark must leave his family and prepare for a destiny he does not accept. His friendship with Lana deepens into a relationship, while Chloe, hurt by their closeness and offered a Daily Planet internship by Lionel, agrees to investigate Clark. Lex’s marriage to Dr. Helen Bryce briefly appears to offer a new start, but Lionel’s schemes and the mystery surrounding Clark continue to divide them. In the finale, Clark tries to use a kryptonite copy of the ship’s key to destroy it and silence Jor-El. The blast injures Jonathan and Martha, and Martha loses her pregnancy. Grieving and blaming himself, Clark puts on a red-kryptonite ring and rides away for Metropolis; Lex, meanwhile, is stranded alone when his honeymoon plane crashes over the ocean.
