Otis starts the new term dating Ola, but his private anxieties have changed rather than disappeared. He is uncomfortable when he discovers that Jean and Jakob are also together, and he struggles to explain his own behavior to Ola. At Moordale, rumors of a chlamydia outbreak turn students against one another. Otis initially refuses to return to giving advice, then helps investigate accusations against Fiona. Maeve, meanwhile, is working at a shopping center after her exclusion from school. She encounters Erin, who says she is in recovery, and begins an uneasy reunion with her mother and young half-sister Elsie.
Maeve asks Groff for another chance at school, using the essays she wrote for other students to put pressure on him. Miss Sands helps her turn a confrontation over the intercom into a return to education. Maeve also identifies a missing connection in Otis's investigation, allowing Owen to admit his involvement and stop the accusations against Fiona. Jean challenges the parents' panic at a school meeting and receives an invitation to improve the curriculum. Otis speaks honestly to Ola, who wants them to work through their difficulties together. He then persuades Maeve to reopen their clinic. Elsewhere, Jackson deliberately injures his hand and is told he cannot swim while it heals.
