Defeat at Actium sends Antony and Cleopatra back to Alexandria, where Octavian closes in on their palace. Vorenus refuses to open the gates against the commander he has sworn to serve. Octavian separately offers Cleopatra safety in exchange for Antony, and a false report of her death drives Antony to suicide with Vorenus's help. Finding Cleopatra alive afterwards, Vorenus turns his attention to getting Caesarion out. Cleopatra meets Octavian but understands that he intends to exhibit her as a captive in Rome. She chooses death before he can take her away, leaving Octavian the victor without the living prize he wanted.
Octavian sends Pullo after Vorenus and Caesarion, unaware that the soldier wants to save the boy. The friends reunite and try to travel quietly, but soldiers at a checkpoint discover enough to force a fight. Vorenus is badly wounded, and Pullo brings him home to the children from whom he has been estranged. Their final meeting allows reconciliation while he lies gravely ill. Octavian celebrates his victory in Rome, where Atia asserts her place despite the personal cost of Antony's fall. Pullo tells Octavian that Caesarion is dead, keeping the surviving child out of his reach. The series ends with the two walking through Rome and Pullo beginning to explain the truth about the boy's father.
