Checkmate

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Peña prepares an operation against Gilberto Rodríguez while trying to keep the cartel's police informants from warning him. Radios and phones are collected, and a misleading target draws attention away from the real raid. Colonel Martínez leads a separate force toward Gilberto's actual home. Jorge monitors the police activity but is diverted by Miguel's request that he recover María's son from her husband's family.

Peña's team joins the search at the correct house and finds Gilberto hidden beneath the stairs. Calderón's efforts to alert the cartel confirm the investigators' suspicions about him. Moving the prisoner out of Cali creates another danger as compromised police try to intercept the transfer. Decoys and Martínez's intervention at the airport allow the team to put Gilberto on a flight to Bogotá rather than lose him to his own network.

The arrest unsettles officials who were relying on Cali's planned surrender, and Miguel demands answers from the men responsible for security. President Samper allows the detention to stand, giving Peña an apparent victory. Martínez then learns that seized paperwork names him among officers supposedly paid by the cartel. Forced to surrender his badge and weapon, he explains that the accusation is meant to discredit the arrest and deter other honest officers. Peña has captured Gilberto but lost a Colombian commander he trusted.
