A flashback follows Zhang and Chen in 1982, when their relationship depends on keeping it hidden. They dream of going to America together, but Chen faces an arranged marriage and loses faith that they will escape. He kills himself in front of Zhang. In the present, Whiterose accepts Price's resignation and chooses Tyrell as his replacement, bringing the Deus Group meeting forward to Christmas Day. Elliot has little time to gain access to the group's bank accounts. Darlene identifies Olivia Cortez, a Cyprus National Bank employee linked to Susan Jacobs, as someone whose security credentials could help them get inside.
Elliot approaches Olivia at a bar while she waits for a date. His attempt to steal access develops into a conversation about addiction and loneliness, and the two return to her apartment together. While she sleeps, he retrieves the code he needs and sends it to Darlene. Olivia later speaks about her recovery and fear of losing her son, and Elliot tells her about his own despair. Elsewhere, Vera receives a photograph of Elliot with Krista and kills a henchman who disappoints him. Elliot notices a surveillance van following him and returns home, where Tyrell announces his promotion and suggests they exploit it against Whiterose. The Dark Army is listening outside, and Elliot cannot warn him before he speaks.
