With Jamie in the household, Malcolm and Reese move into more complicated teenage territory. Malcolm visits colleges with Lois, who turns an ordinary campus tour into a battle with a resident adviser, and dates a girl whose family interests him so much that he neglects the relationship itself. Reese briefly moves out after a fight with Lois; the independence improves his schoolwork until his parents discover enormous credit-card debts and bring him home. Dewey also shows a sharper grasp of how to get what he wants from the adults around him.
Francis continues working at Otto’s ranch, taking on odd jobs and sometimes finding a way to be useful, even as his family expects him to fail. Lois’s relatives bring new pressure: her sister Susan favors the boys and blames Lois for her own unhappiness, while Lois learns she has a half-sister and meets another branch of the family. Reese shows an unexpected strength in the kitchen, and Malcolm’s academic confidence is tested when Dewey risks being placed in the gifted class. Malcolm gets Reese to take Dewey’s IQ test, landing him in the Busey class instead.
The closing two-part story pushes several conflicts at once. Reese discovers that Beth is involved with Malcolm, runs away heartbroken and joins the Army with other young men; Malcolm, feeling guilty, tries to find him. Hal is arrested after refusing to give false testimony against his employer, while Lois loses her job and reaches a breaking point. Francis and Piama try to take charge, but Malcolm finds evidence clearing Hal. Reese graduates basic training and is sent to Afghanistan, leaving Lois desperate to find him.
