The Man in Black sends Sawyer to Hydra Island to investigate the Ajira plane and its remaining passengers. Sawyer finds bodies and meets Zoe, who pretends to be a surviving passenger. He detects the lie and is taken by armed men to Widmore's submarine. Sawyer offers to deliver the Man in Black into Widmore's hands in return for passage off the island. Back at camp, he openly reports this bargain to the Man in Black and presents it as a way to gain Widmore's trust. Privately, Sawyer tells Kate that he intends to let both sides fight while they escape aboard the submarine.
In the flash-sideways, James Ford is a police detective working with Miles. He still searches for Anthony Cooper, the con man connected to his parents' deaths, but conceals a recent trip to Australia from his partner. Miles arranges a date with Charlotte, which ends badly when she discovers James's private file. After Miles confronts his dishonesty, James finally begins to explain his past. Their conversation is interrupted by a collision with Kate's car, and James catches her after a chase. On the island, Claire attacks Kate over Aaron while Sayid watches without helping. The Man in Black intervenes and admits that he encouraged Claire's hatred of the Others. Claire later apologizes to Kate.
