Jack wakes on the island and finds Hurley struggling in the water near an unconscious Kate. The story then returns to the preparations that brought them there. Beneath the church in Los Angeles, Eloise Hawking shows Jack, Sun, Ben and Desmond the Lamp Post station, where Dharma calculated the island's changing location. She identifies Ajira Flight 316 as their chance to return and says they must recreate the conditions of their original flight as closely as possible.
Desmond refuses to join another trip and leaves after delivering Daniel's message. Hawking gives Jack Locke's final note and tells him that Locke's body must carry something belonging to Christian. Jack finds his father's shoes while visiting his grandfather and later places them on Locke. Kate agrees to come but insists Jack never ask what happened to Aaron. A badly injured Ben calls Jack and asks him to collect the coffin from Jill's butcher shop.
Jack, Kate and Sun arrive at the airport, where Hurley has bought the remaining seats to keep other people off the flight. Sayid boards in a woman's custody, and Ben arrives just before departure. Jack discovers that Frank Lapidus is their pilot. During the flight, he finally reads Locke's note, which expresses regret that Jack did not believe him. Turbulence and white light interrupt the journey. Back on the island, Jack, Kate and Hurley encounter Jin driving a Dharma van and wearing a Dharma uniform.
