Locke tells Kate that he is leaving with the Others, who then abandon the barracks and gas her room. Kate wakes in the jungle handcuffed to Juliet and insists on returning for Jack and Sayid. Their arguments turn into a fight, during which Kate dislocates Juliet's shoulder. They shelter from the smoke monster before Kate helps put the shoulder back into place. During another encounter, Juliet produces a key, removes the handcuffs and activates the security fence to stop the creature. She claims she concealed the key because she feared Kate would abandon her. They reach the empty barracks, find Jack and Sayid and prepare to return to the beach with Juliet despite Sayid's objections.
Flashbacks show Kate meeting Cassidy while trying to contact her mother in Iowa. Cassidy helps expose the police surveillance around Diane's home, then creates a distraction at the restaurant so Kate can speak privately with her. Diane tells Kate that she loved Wayne and rejects her claim that the killing was for her benefit. Cassidy later reveals her pregnancy by the man who conned her. At the beach, Hurley invents a threat that the camp will banish Sawyer unless he improves his behavior. Sawyer apologizes, helps Claire and hunts food for everyone. Once he discovers the deception, Hurley explains that the camp needs him to act as a leader.
