Kate, Sayid and Locke enter the Others' settlement after seeing Jack behave comfortably among its residents. Kate approaches Jack, who refuses to leave, and the Others capture her and Sayid. Locke separately confronts Ben, demanding access to the submarine. He uses Alex to retrieve Sayid's pack, which contains explosives. As Alex guides Locke toward the vessel, Rousseau watches her daughter from concealment. Jack explains to Kate that he has negotiated passage home and subsequently asks Ben to release his friends after his departure. Ben agrees, while continuing to manipulate Locke's determination to destroy the submarine. Jack and Juliet arrive at the dock just as Locke leaves it, and the submarine explodes.
Flashbacks reveal how Locke lost the use of his legs. Peter Talbot visits him because Anthony Cooper is attempting to marry Peter's wealthy mother under another name. Locke confronts Cooper and demands that he stop the con. After detectives report Peter's death, Locke visits his father again and challenges his denial of involvement. Cooper suddenly pushes him through an apartment window. Locke survives the fall but is left paralyzed and later weeps as he is placed in a wheelchair. On the island, Ben admits that Locke's actions gave him a way to keep Jack on the island. He and Richard lead Locke to another room, where Locke discovers that Cooper is being held captive.
