Hurley is assigned to manage the hatch's food supply, a responsibility he fears will turn his friends against him. Charlie asks for peanut butter for Claire, but Hurley refuses to promise anything and brings Rose underground to help take inventory. He tries to relinquish the job, only for Locke to insist that he continue. His anxiety escalates until he prepares to destroy the pantry with dynamite. Rose stops him, and Hurley explains that having something everyone wants makes him fear losing their affection. He eventually proposes distributing the food freely instead of rationing it. Jack agrees, and the survivors share an abundant meal on the beach.
Flashbacks show Hurley keeping his lottery victory secret while spending a final carefree day with Johnny. He quits his restaurant job, takes part in a prank against his boss and asks Starla for a date. Johnny promises their friendship will not change, but a shopkeeper publicly identifies Hurley as the winner. On the island, the raft survivors learn that their captors also survived Oceanic 815 and came from its tail section. Libby says that many of their original group are gone, and Bernard asks about Rose. Meanwhile, the raft's message bottle washes ashore. Sun buries it without alerting the wider camp. Jack and Sayid explore the hatch's thick concrete barrier, while Rose saves a candy bar for her husband.
