Outlaws

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

A boar invades Sawyer's shelter, damages his belongings and takes his tarp into the jungle. Pursuing it, he hears whispers that echo a disturbing phrase from his past. He asks Sayid about the voices, then becomes determined to kill the animal. Kate offers to help track it in exchange for access to Sawyer's supplies. During a drinking game that evening, each admits having killed a man, making their flirtation more uncomfortable and revealing.

Flashbacks show Sawyer seeking revenge for the con that destroyed his family. Hibbs sends him to Australia, claiming that Frank Duckett is the man responsible. Sawyer initially hesitates to shoot him. In a bar, he meets Christian Shephard, who regrets being unable to tell his son that he loves him and is proud of him. Sawyer later shoots Duckett, only to learn that Hibbs used him to eliminate a debtor who was not his intended target.

The boar again ruins Sawyer's possessions while leaving Kate's untouched. Locke tells them about his foster mother's belief that a dog carried a message from his dead sister, offering a story rather than an explanation for Sawyer's animal. When Sawyer finally confronts the boar, he chooses not to shoot. He returns his gun to Jack. Jack then repeats Christian's remark about the Red Sox, allowing Sawyer to recognize their relationship, though he keeps the encounter with Christian to himself.
