Renslayer follows Miss Minutes to Chicago in 1868 and leaves a TVA handbook for the young Victor Timely, carrying out instructions arranged by He Who Remains. Years later, Loki and Mobius track her TemPad to the 1893 World's Fair, where the adult Timely presents a prototype Temporal Loom. His resemblance to He Who Remains makes him a possible answer to the TVA's access problem, but several people want him for different reasons. Renslayer expects him to lead the agency, Loki and Mobius need his temporal aura, and Sylvie arrives determined to prevent another version of the TVA's ruler from gaining power.
Timely's inventions mix real work with scams, and the struggle over him moves from the fair to a boat and his Wisconsin workshop. He abandons Renslayer after she proposes an equal partnership, then recoils when Miss Minutes declares her feelings and asks for a physical body. Loki and Mobius catch up, but Sylvie takes control of the confrontation. Timely pleads that he has never committed the crimes she remembers and can choose a different life. She spares him and lets the others take him to the TVA. Sylvie sends Renslayer to the Citadel, where He Who Remains' body still lies. Miss Minutes promises Renslayer a secret about her own past.
