In the Red begins with Lightman under pressure to finish a book and Foster freezing their company’s assets to get his attention. At a bank, he spots preparations for a robbery and talks his way into the group behind it. Mike Salinger’s anger comes from a mortgage error that helped destroy his family life, while accomplice Henry Miller brings a more immediate threat. Lightman works with Detective Wallowski to turn the robbery into a police trap.
With the robbers caught, Lightman identifies the bank manager who concealed the mistake and obtains an apology for Salinger’s former wife. His methods still strain the office: Loker considers other work, Foster recruits graduate students, and Lightman insists that she stop interfering with his finances. The fictional case resolves a specific grievance without restoring Salinger’s old life. It also establishes Wallowski as a working ally after Lightman has cut the consultancy’s ties with the FBI.
Killer App makes the final investigation personal for Gillian when former patient Claire is murdered during a struggle over a social-networking company. Zach tries to direct suspicion towards Kyle, Claire’s secret lover, and destroys computer evidence. Lightman and Kyle provoke him into exposing what he knows, then broadcast his words through his own service. Zach ends up in custody. At home, Emily asks Lightman whether he loves Gillian and why he has not acted on it. He admits the feeling but has no answer to the second question.
