Ray dresses as Emmit and bullies his brother's banker into opening a safe-deposit box, expecting to recover the stamp. He also withdraws $10,000 from Emmit's account. The box contains the ashes of Emmit's dog instead. Sy retaliates by giving Ray's employers evidence of his relationship with Nikki, a parolee under his supervision. Ray declares his love for her and loses his job.
Ray's dismissal also ruins Nikki's attempt to secure a bridge sponsor when he fails to attend their meeting. Meanwhile, Emmit and Sy discuss selling their company to escape Varga. Varga arrives uninvited at Emmit's home for dinner and argues that ordinary wealth offers little protection. His promise of far greater riches persuades Emmit to sign a partnership agreement despite the intimidation already surrounding their business.
Gloria finds Ray's card in Maurice's wallet and visits his workplace. She meets traffic officer Winnie Lopez, who is investigating the collision Sy caused while damaging Ray's Corvette. Gloria is struck by Ray's surname, the same as Ennis's. Winnie questions an anxious Sy while Varga's men watch nearby. Later she visits Gloria at home, connecting the brothers, Sy's collision and the similar names of Eden Prairie and Eden Valley. The two officers now have separate investigations pointing toward the same family dispute.
