Malvo has Don call Stavros about the money, then knocks Don unconscious and tapes him to an exercise bench with an unloaded gun fixed to his hands. Malvo fires into the neighborhood and leaves. Responding police mistake Don for an armed attacker and kill him. On the road, Wrench and Numbers stage a collision and ambush Malvo in a blizzard. He slips away, captures Numbers and learns that Fargo sent them before cutting his throat. Molly and Gus investigate the gunfire. With visibility almost gone, Gus fires at a figure in the snow and accidentally shoots Molly.
Stavros abandons the planned payoff and returns to the place where he found the original briefcase. He buries the blackmail money there, believing that returning it will end his punishment. Fish fall from the sky, causing the crash that kills his son Dmitri and bodyguard Wally. Lester meanwhile sneaks out of hospital in disguise and steals a car. He retrieves the murder weapon and other items from his house, then plants them in Chazz's gun cabinet to suggest an affair with Pearl. He also puts a handgun in Gordo's school bag. Returning to his hospital bed undetected, Lester smiles at his own plan.
