McKay's upbringing emphasizes athletic discipline and suppressing emotion, but college forces him to question whether professional football is realistic. A violent fraternity hazing leaves him humiliated in front of Cassie. His response afterward damages their intimacy, and Cassie arrives at Daniel's Halloween party carrying the hurt from that encounter. When Daniel pressures her and she refuses him, he insults her rather than respecting her decision.
Rue attends the same party sober and watches Jules drink heavily. She senses a distance that Jules will not explain, then helps her after she falls into the swimming pool. Rue also reconciles with Fezco, whose refusal to sell her drugs had previously provoked her anger. Kat continues avoiding emotional closeness with Ethan while her paid online persona grows more confident. Cassie later realizes that her period is late.
Flashbacks reveal why Nate can arrive at the party alongside Maddy despite the assault investigation. He has threatened Tyler into accepting blame for choking her, using the prospect of a more serious accusation as leverage. Nate also blackmails Jules into telling police that she witnessed Tyler commit the attack. Her statement supports a false account of events, and Rue notices her reaction when Nate appears. The party ends with Nate publicly restored while Jules carries the consequences of helping him.
