Nate's childhood is shaped by discovering recordings of his father's secret encounters. He grows into a controlling athlete whose relationship with Maddy mixes possessiveness with anger. After seeing Maddy with Tyler at McKay's party, Nate tracks Tyler down, breaks into his apartment and assaults him. He then showers in the apartment and takes Maddy on a date, keeping his violence separate from the attentive boyfriend he presents to her.
School brings Rue into contact with the summer she would rather hide. Asked to share a memory in class, she becomes overwhelmed by recollections of her overdose and family arguments. Her friendship with Jules gives her something to anticipate, but she continues deceiving the people monitoring her recovery. Kat also faces exposure when a private recording circulates online, and she tries to persuade classmates and school staff that she is not the person shown.
Rue's visit to Fezco becomes dangerous when his supplier Mouse arrives. Mouse pressures her to take fentanyl, and Fezco pays him to prevent further exploitation. Jules comes to collect Rue and watches over her afterward. While Rue sleeps, Jules continues messaging someone using the name Tyler. The final reveal shows that this apparently promising new contact is Nate, connecting Jules's private conversations to the same boy who has just attacked the real Tyler.
