Matt survives a building collapse and reaches a passer-by, asking to be taken to Father Lantom rather than a hospital. Lantom and Sister Maggie care for him at the church, where his physical recovery is slow and his senses remain damaged. He cannot hear properly through one ear, and the loss makes ordinary movement and fighting difficult. His memories of Elektra and anger at God leave him unwilling to contact the friends who believe he is gone.
Karen continues paying for Matt's apartment, refusing to accept that he died. Foggy tries to persuade her to let go, but agrees to help with another month's rent. A memory returns to Matt revealing his identity to Karen, when she questioned his promise to stop being Daredevil. In the present, he speaks bitterly to Maggie and Lantom about faith, suffering and the life he no longer wants to resume under his own name.
Maggie challenges his surrender and reminds him of his father's refusal to stay down. Matt begins training and partly restores his hearing, but a sparring session exposes his continuing weakness. Back in a black mask, he interrupts a street attack and takes another beating, inviting his opponents to finish him before they flee. Elsewhere, financially strained FBI investigator Ray Nadeem visits Fisk in prison. Fisk offers cooperation in exchange for protecting Vanessa, turning a routine interview into the beginning of a deal.
