Matt and Elektra are attacked beside the excavation by fighters whose heartbeats he cannot detect. She tells him to track their weapons, but a poisoned wound leaves her near death. Stick arrives and gets them back to Matt's apartment, where he treats her and finally explains that their enemies are the Hand. He also reveals that Elektra has been working with him, forcing Matt to reconsider how much of their reunion was arranged behind his back.
In court, Foggy questions Frank's former commander, Ray Schoonover, who credits Frank with saving his unit after a disastrous decision. Evidence about Frank's brain injury offers another possible defence, but an outburst from a victim's son confronts him with the families his own killings have damaged. Karen persuades him to testify. Matt reaches court for the examination, only for Frank to abandon the defence and loudly embrace his actions after a message reaches him through a court officer.
Karen and Foggy blame Matt for another failure, while Elektra decides she wants to stay with him and dismisses Stick. Their attempt to imagine a different life is interrupted by a young Hand attacker. Matt subdues him and hesitates on discovering his age, but Elektra kills him. As Matt collapses from an arrow wound, her choice reopens their disagreement over killing. Frank enters prison, where the officer who passed the message leads him to Wilson Fisk.
