A trip to collect a bounty on Ganymede sends Jet back to the place where he worked as a police officer and lived with Alisa. He still carries the watch associated with the day she left, and a former colleague directs him to the bar she now runs. Alisa has a new partner, Rhint, and plans to close the business and leave. Jet wants an explanation for their old separation, but she gives him little to hold onto. While they talk, Spike receives news that Rhint has a bounty on his head after killing a loan shark.
Rhint fears that Jet's visit is an attempt to capture him, and he and Alisa flee by boat. Spike gives chase until Jet intervenes and takes responsibility for bringing them in himself. His pursuit ends with their boat wrecked and Alisa pointing a gun at him. She finally explains that his constant protection and certainty left her unable to make her own decisions. Rhint offered a relationship in which she could act for herself, even if it came with hardship. Jet proceeds with the arrest but treats Rhint's account of self-defence seriously and tells him to face the charge. Alisa will wait for him. Leaving them behind, Jet throws the watch into the water and stops measuring his life against the moment she departed.
