Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
When season six opens, Shirley has left to care for her ill father; the premiere explains she has become a personal chef to a detective. A roof collapse forces Greendale to hire administrative consultant Francesca Frankie Dart, whose practical rules collide with the Save Greendale Committee's resistance to change. Jeff and Abed eventually persuade Frankie to return after she resigns and the school discovers it has lost its insurance. Dean Pelton also buys a virtual-reality system from its inventor, Elroy Patashnik. Elroy joins the group after they help free the Dean from the system. Greendale's new year includes an underground paintball-assassin game, which Frankie has tried to ban; the group becomes involved in tracking the mysterious player Silver Ballz.
As another school year ends, Frankie declares Greendale saved and disbands the committee. The finale imagines possible versions of a seventh year, using the characters' pitches to show how each might handle the group changing. Abed decides to leave for a production job in Los Angeles, Annie heads to Washington for an FBI internship, and Elroy says he has been hired by LinkedIn. Jeff remains at Greendale with Britta, Chang, Dean Pelton and Frankie, watching as the people who shaped his years there make plans elsewhere. The show ends with the school still open and the study room no longer holding the same circle of friends. Their farewells are real, while the proposed future seasons remain imagined possibilities rather than additional events.
