Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Chuck Bartowski’s ordinary routine at the Burbank Buy More ends when his old friend Bryce Larkin sends him an encrypted email containing the government’s Intersect database. Its images lodge in Chuck’s memory, turning him into an intelligence source who flashes on classified faces and objects. CIA agent Sarah Walker and NSA officer John Casey are assigned to protect and use him. Casey works undercover at the store, while Sarah’s first cover is the Weinerlicious across the street. Their missions send the reluctant trio after arms dealers, stolen art, spies and an escaped CIA inventor; Chuck’s flashes help, though his instincts to trust people can complicate an operation. Sarah and Casey also begin the season suspicious of each other, so Chuck’s handlers have to learn to work as a team.
The cover story presses on Chuck’s home life. His sister Ellie and her boyfriend Devon, nicknamed Captain Awesome, know him as a retail worker, while best friend Morgan and the Buy More crew keep dragging him into comic workplace schemes. Chuck tries to date Sarah, then Lou, but the pretend relationship with Sarah grows more sincere even as Bryce’s return unsettles it. A mission involving his former Stanford professor forces Chuck to revisit why he was expelled; he learns that the Intersect had already identified him as unusually capable. Late in the season, Bryce returns alive and says he was not a traitor: he had acted to keep the Intersect from Fulcrum. When Casey’s orders threaten to remove Chuck from the team, Sarah and Casey choose to help him instead. A hidden bug in the Buy More then exposes the risk that someone has found Chuck’s cover, setting the team’s next problem without resolving the larger spy conspiracy.
