Blackadder's debts make a pay rise attractive, but George has gambled away his own money and wants a loan from his servant. Edmund turns to marriage as a way to refill the royal purse, selecting Amy Hardwood as the daughter of a supposedly wealthy industrialist. He supplies the romantic words that George cannot manage and speaks from beneath Amy's balcony while restraining the Prince's less delicate advances. The courtship seems successful until her father reveals that the family is penniless.
With the wedding cancelled and fresh bills already incurred, Edmund adopts Baldrick's suggestion of highway robbery. Lacking a horse, he rides his servant and steals valuables from a passing coach. The real highwayman called the Shadow then confronts him and proves to be Amy. She proposes that Edmund rob George and join her abroad. Edmund welcomes a future of wealth and escape, but Amy instead takes the stolen property and leaves him tied up under threat of death.
Baldrick arrives seeking his hero's autograph and frees his master. A wanted poster gives Edmund a better plan: arrange Amy's capture and collect the reward. George reads the next morning that she has been arrested and hanged, then abandons his grief for breakfast. Edmund's winnings do not remain safely hidden, however. The Prince has found the reward money in the biscuit barrel and assumes it belongs to him, prompting Blackadder to suggest another game of cards.
