Plague has left Richard IV ill and delirious, and the council turns its fear towards witchcraft. Edmund objects to summoning the Witchsmeller Pursuivant, then visits a village where the hunter has already burned a woman and her cat. His scornful remarks reach the Witchsmeller himself. Back at the castle, Edmund agrees to a supposedly simple test and promptly finds himself accused of being a witch.
The trial offers no useful chance to defend himself. Percy and Baldrick are condemned alongside their master before they can act as his lawyers. The Witchsmeller twists Edmund's answers about his cat into claims of blood drinking, presents a confession supposedly signed by his dead horse, and produces a woman who identifies a poodle as Edmund's offspring. Each protest becomes another opportunity to strengthen the accusation. Harry pronounces all three guilty and sentences them to be burned alive.
An escape leads them straight into the sick king's room and back into captivity. Edmund's mother and his young wife offer a small doll rather than the rescue he wants. Tied to a stake, he tries confessing to delay the fire. When the doll falls into the flames, the Witchsmeller burns instead, the prisoners' ropes break and the fire goes out. Richard recovers, while Gertrude silences Leia's explanation. The Queen's sparkling wink reveals the magical power that the prosecution failed to find.
