Nish stops to charge her car near a roadside museum and accepts a tour from proprietor Rolo Haynes. His exhibits come from experiments he helped arrange in transferred sensation and consciousness. The first concerns a doctor who could feel patients' symptoms, then became addicted to their pain. His pursuit of stronger experiences ended in murder. Rolo treats the resulting equipment as another attraction while the building grows uncomfortably hot.
A toy monkey contains Carrie, whose consciousness was first placed inside her husband's head after she became comatose. Their shared existence deteriorated, and his new partner wanted her removed. The monkey gave Carrie only two phrases and left her dependent on a child who eventually lost interest. Rolo's main exhibit is a copy of condemned prisoner Clayton Leigh, repeatedly electrocuted by visitors who receive permanent souvenirs of his suffering.
Nish reveals that Clayton is her father and that the exhibit helped destroy her family. She sabotaged the air conditioning and poisoned the water Rolo accepted during the tour. As he dies, she transfers his mind into the machinery and subjects it to the final electrocution, keeping a souvenir that traps him in pain. Nish rescues the monkey and burns the museum. Her mother's consciousness speaks from inside her head as she drives away, leaving Rolo's collection destroyed and its owner reduced to the kind of object he sold.
