Lacie Pound rehearses smiles because every encounter can change her rating. In her society, strangers award stars that affect access to housing, transport and work. She wants a fashionable apartment whose discount requires a higher score. An invitation to be her childhood friend Naomi's maid of honour looks like the shortcut she needs: impress the highly rated guests with a moving speech and benefit from their approval.
The journey to the wedding steadily strips away that plan. An argument with her brother starts a fall in her score, and a cancelled flight brings a public outburst that earns a penalty. Her replacement rental car cannot be charged at the stop she reaches. A low-rated truck driver gives her a lift and describes abandoning the pursuit of approval after her husband's death. Lacie still believes the wedding can repair everything.
Naomi then withdraws the invitation, admitting that Lacie's former rating was part of the wedding's calculated appeal. Lacie continues anyway, borrows a vehicle and arrives filthy and furious. Her carefully prepared speech becomes a bitter account of their friendship, delivered as guests mark her down. Security removes her after she brandishes a knife. In a cell with her rating implants removed, she begins trading insults with another prisoner. Their delight comes from speaking freely when neither can damage the other's score.
