In Omaha, Gene reluctantly points police toward a hiding shoplifter, then shouts that the young man should remain silent and get a lawyer. Back at work, Gene collapses. In Albuquerque, Jimmy helps Chuck remove the foil from his walls and discovers their childhood copy of The Adventures of Mabel. His attempt to reminisce fails when Chuck returns to the Mesa Verde forgery. Captain Bauer later threatens charges over Jimmy’s fraudulent access to the Air Force base unless he withdraws his commercial. Jimmy refuses. Chuck plays the recorded confession for Howard, then deliberately lets Ernesto hear it while replacing the recorder’s batteries, demanding that he keep it secret.
Mike leaves the desert where his attempt to shoot Hector was interrupted. Certain someone has been following him, he dismantles his car at a scrapyard but finds no tracker. A display of replacement fuel caps gives him another idea: the device is hidden inside the cap itself. He obtains an identical tracker through the veterinarian, studies its low-battery warning and substitutes his own device. After draining the original tracker’s battery, he waits nearby for its owner to replace it. A man arrives before dawn and removes Mike’s planted device. Mike can now follow the people who have been following him.
