Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
After the King of Ooo takes the throne, Bubblegum lives outside her kingdom and has to adjust to being an ordinary exile. The season’s central arc then turns to Marceline, who asks Bubblegum to remove her vampirism because she no longer wants immortality. The extracted essence escapes and divides into the five vampires Marceline once defeated. As Finn, Jake, Bubblegum and Marceline hunt them, Marceline’s memories trace her childhood with her mother, Simon’s departure as the crown changed him, and her teenage years among surviving humans after the Mushroom War. She also recalls killing the Vampire King and being turned by him.
Marceline and her friends overcome the resurrected vampires, letting her recover their powers, but the Vampire King eventually asks to be cured too. Bubblegum removes his essence, which erupts into the destructive Dark Cloud. Marceline initially loses the will to fight, then Ice King reminds her of her purpose; she flies into the cloud and drains it, becoming the Vampire Queen again by choice. The miniseries closes with her singing “Everything Stays” as Ooo recovers. Bubblegum also returns to rule the Candy Kingdom, while the season’s smaller adventures include her uneasy relationship with her former subjects and the Banana Guards’ mistrust of her.
