Jack Bauer and Sergei Bazhaev persuade Josef to surrender the nuclear rods by promising him immunity. Farhad's group reaches him first: Josef is shot, and the rods change hands before CTU can recover them. Farhad then learns that Samir intends to use the material against the United States. This is beyond the plan Farhad agreed to, and he turns to CTU with a warning about the attack and a request for help.
Rob Weiss pressures Brian Hastings to make Renee Walker answer for the failed undercover operation rather than let the blame reach their own offices. Justice Department investigator Kristin Smith questions her account of Vladimir's death. Jack intervenes and threatens Smith, but security subdues him with a Taser. When Farhad's call offers a fresh lead and Cole cannot be reached, Jack agrees to return to the field in exchange for ending the attempt to make Renee the scapegoat.
Cole has followed Dana, who is watching Kevin and Nick and considering killing them. She finally tells him about her former identity and the warehouse robbery. Despite his anger, Cole confronts the two men and orders them to leave her alone. Nick refuses to accept the warning, stabs Kevin and turns on Cole. Kevin warns the couple, and Cole shoots Nick, leaving both blackmailers dead and Dana facing the consequences of the secret she tried to keep from her fiance.
