Jack pursues Morris's abductors by helicopter while Chloe struggles to keep the satellite search moving. Buchanan removes her from duty until she can work effectively. McCarthy and Rita evade the helicopter beneath an overpass and change cars. Morris tells Rita that he will be forced to help detonate nuclear weapons, hoping she will release him. Instead, she kills McCarthy and decides to collect Fayed's payment herself.
Buchanan informs Jack that Graem has died, and Marilyn arrives at CTU to hear that her husband suffered a heart attack. At the White House, Assad agrees to help Palmer appeal for information about Fayed. Lennox considers resigning, prompting Reed Pollock to suggest that others want the vice president to replace Palmer. Lennox objects to any suggestion of removing the president through unlawful means, although he returns to the conversation after learning the nuclear threat remains active.
Rita delivers Morris to Fayed, who beats him when he refuses to cooperate. Chloe traces a call to the apartment building, and Jack orders its fire alarm triggered to narrow the search. Fayed drills into Morris’s shoulder and shoots Rita as she begs to leave. Morris finally builds the reprogramming device. CTU raids the apartment and rescues Morris, but Fayed escapes after arming a bomb. Guided by Chloe, Jack disarms it. Morris warns that the device he built can activate the remaining weapons.
