Doyle tells Josh that he will be exchanged for the stolen component to prevent a war, and implants a tracker so CTU can recover him afterward. Jack warns Karen Hayes that Phillip will try to keep both the boy and the board. Karen asks Buchanan to intervene while Lennox agrees to look away. Buchanan intercepts Jack's transport, giving him the chance to overpower his escort and escape.
Phillip forces CTU to shut down its satellite coverage and sends away the helicopter above the exchange site. Nadia keeps Marilyn from learning what is happening to her son, while Doyle waits at the beach with Josh and promises to bring him back. Karen's use of secure information is discovered after Buchanan frees Jack. She is detained and accepts responsibility for helping them, refusing to implicate Lennox in her decision.
Two men arrive by boat with what appears to be the circuit board. The device explodes when Doyle examines it, seriously injuring his eyes, and the men take Josh away. Jack and Buchanan arrive too late to stop the boat without endangering him. Phillip's men disable Josh's tracker. Jack asks CTU to investigate nearby oil platforms linked to his father's companies while Phillip waits offshore with Cheng. As Chloe works to find the platform, she collapses, adding another emergency before Josh's location has been confirmed.
