Jack Bauer has spent eighteen months hiding behind the name Frank Flynn when coordinated attacks destroy the circle protecting his secret. David Palmer is shot dead while visiting his brother Wayne in Los Angeles. Michelle Dessler dies in a car bombing, and Tony Almeida is badly wounded when he rushes to her. Chloe O'Brian escapes a pursuer and calls Jack, recognizing that the people who knew he survived are being targeted.
Leaving his life with Diane Huxley means explaining himself to her suspicious son Derek, who follows him and ends up aboard a stolen helicopter. Jack takes Derek to meet Chloe at an abandoned refinery. President Logan, meanwhile, insists that his treaty ceremony with Russian President Suvarov proceed despite Palmer's assassination. Martha Logan believes Palmer's telephone call the previous night concerned national security, but her husband dismisses her warning.
The men following Chloe reach the refinery before Jack can get everyone away. He uses smoke to cover their escape and fights through the attackers, leaving their leader Conrad Haas wounded. Haas says Palmer was the real target and the other attacks were intended to frame Jack. Once Haas admits firing the fatal shot, Jack kills him, with Chloe and Derek close enough to witness what he has done.
