Build your first shelter and house the Guide
On this page
Build one enclosed, lit room near your starting point before committing to a long expedition. You gain a place to craft, an obvious destination for the trip home, and a house the Guide can occupy. This walkthrough covers unmodded Desktop PC 1.4.5.8 on an ordinary seed and Classic world difficulty.
Gather a small building kit
Aim for about 100 ordinary Wood and at least one Gel. That wood target leaves room for mistakes, extra torches, and later additions; it is not a housing requirement. Chop nearby trees with your starting Axe and collect Gel from a Slime. Use the Pickaxe when you need to level the ground. The Guide beside your original spawn can explain the basics, and his Craft option shows recipes that use a material you give him. Starting tools and crafting.
Choose a fairly level Forest spot close enough that you can find it again without a long search. Leave space on either side for expansion. For now, a short path home is more useful than a grand building site halfway across the map.
Build a room you can check
Use an outer rectangle 10 tiles wide and 8 tiles high, counting the floor, roof, and side walls. This gives an 8-by-6 interior. It is a roomy starter example, not the smallest valid house.
- Make the floor and roof from solid Wood blocks. Build both sides, leaving a three-tile-high opening at floor level for a Wooden Door.
- Craft a Work Bench by hand and place it inside. Stand beside it to make the remaining furniture.
- Fill the interior background with Wood Walls. These are the backdrop behind your character; placing more solid Wood inside would block the room instead.
- Add the Door, a Wooden Chair, and a Torch. Keep furniture away from the doorway and leave open standing space around the center of the floor.
| Craft | Ingredients | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Work Bench | 10 Wood | By hand |
| Wooden Door | 6 Wood | Work Bench |
| Wooden Chair | 4 Wood | Work Bench |
| 4 Wood Walls | 1 Wood | Work Bench |
| 3 Torches | 1 Wood + 1 Gel | By hand |
These are the ordinary wooden recipes. The torch ingredients make a batch of three; only one needs to be placed in this room. Furniture recipes, Wood Walls, Torches.
For this exact example, 12 Wood makes the 48 background walls. The solid frame uses another 29 Wood after allowing for the door. Together with the listed furniture and one torch batch, that is 62 Wood and one Gel, so the 100-Wood shopping target provides useful spares. Reuse those spares for platforms or an adjoining room.
Check the room before decorating
Open the inventory’s housing menu, select its question-mark query, and click inside the room. A valid house needs an enclosed frame, suitable background walls, a standing place, and furniture covering light, table, chair, and entrance. Its area must be at least 60 and fewer than 750 tiles, including the frame; this example contains 80. Housing checks.
A Work Bench already meets the table category, so a separate Wooden Table is optional. Work Benches. Keep the Torch even after adding a Furnace or Campfire: neither of those counts as the required housing light. Furnace, Campfires.
If the query rejects the room, follow its message: check the background for gaps, confirm every furniture item is placed, and clear the center floor. A room near Corruption or Crimson can also fail despite looking complete. Recheck after fixing one issue so you know which change helped.
Once the Guide’s room passes, spend the remaining time arranging your crafting space and supplies. Keep the exit easy to use; avoid filling every empty tile with furniture. Your next useful goal is the first mining trip and anvil, followed by Eye of Cthulhu preparation.
