Start Rust with a Respawn Point and a Small Base
On this page
Give your first Rust session a goal you can finish: place a Sleeping Bag and build somewhere to bring materials back to. Wildlife, the environment and other players all threaten you, so leave room to change plans when a route turns ugly. Rust’s official overview sets out that survival focus. This guide covers the PC game with default rules; check your server’s settings if you play modded.
Choose a session you can manage
Read the server’s rules and wipe announcements before joining. Check population and any group limits, then decide whether the server suits the session you want. A quieter server can leave more room to practise, but fewer players does not mean a safe map.
Use the actual map and visible landmarks to remember where you are gathering and where you want to settle. Pick one nearby destination before moving. Avoid committing to a long trip simply because a guide mentions a compass direction: your server’s terrain and nearby players determine the route.
Gather toward the next craft
The Rock is a basic gathering tool and melee weapon. Use it to begin collecting resources, then turn those resources into tools with a clear purpose. A Stone Hatchet harvests wood from trees and logs; its default recipe costs 200 wood and 100 stones, with no workbench required. A Stone Pickaxe handles primitive mining and also needs no workbench or blueprint research.
Open the crafting menu before you gather more. If your next useful item needs wood, finish that job instead of collecting unrelated materials until your route becomes difficult to retrace. After making a tool, check what you still need for your next goal before spending the rest.
Save cloth for your respawn point
Cloth comes from animals or Hemp Bushes. Reserve 30 cloth for a Sleeping Bag, which has a default recipe and needs no workbench. A placed bag gives you, or the player it is assigned to, a respawn point. It has a cooldown, so placing one does not mean you can use it again immediately after every death.
Place the bag somewhere you intend to return to, then remember the surroundings. Check that it belongs to the intended player. For warmth, light and cooking, a Camp Fire is another useful early item.
Turn a gathering trip into a base
Equip a Building Plan and right-click to choose construction pieces. The Hammer has right-click options for upgrading building materials. Start with a compact enclosed space and leave room to move between your bag, storage and entrance.
Put materials aside for the Tool Cupboard and its upkeep. Follow first base and upkeep to secure the entrance and keep the structure supplied.
On later trips, choose one thing the base needs and return when you have it. If you have the supplies to finish your enclosure, another detour can wait. Once the base is usable, plan workbenches and blueprints around a recipe you want to craft next.
