Khazan: Brink Guard and Brink Dodge Explained
On this page
What each defence does
| Action | Effect |
|---|---|
| Guard | Blocks using stamina; holding it slows movement and stamina recovery |
| Brink Guard | A correctly timed guard uses a small amount of stamina and reduces enemy stamina or fortitude |
| Dodge | Uses stamina to evade, with a brief period of invulnerability |
| Brink Dodge | A correctly timed dodge temporarily enhances dodge attacks |
For Brink Guard, press Guard just before the incoming attack makes contact. For Brink Dodge, time the dodge to the incoming attack. Their timings reward reading the animation; neither means that every successful defence should immediately become an attack.
Read the whole combo
A clean first defence can still leave you facing the next hit. Practise surviving the full sequence, then counter during the recovery you have actually seen.
There is no universal rule to guard only the last hit, never hold Guard, or always attack when the enemy’s stamina is low. The useful question is what the enemy can do next and whether your own stamina leaves room for another defence.
| What happened | Adjustment to try |
|---|---|
| The follow-up caught your counter | Wait for the next hit before committing |
| Holding Guard emptied your stamina | Release it during a safe gap and work on the timed input |
| A dodge cleared the hit but left you out of reach | Reposition instead of forcing a counter |
| You keep missing the same delayed swing | Watch its approach and practise that one timing |
Practise one exchange at a time
Use a readable enemy to learn one attack sequence. Start with survival, then add a single short punish. Once that works consistently, test a longer response.
Treat a failed attempt as information about timing, position or commitment. A successful Brink creates an opportunity; the remaining combo decides whether it is safe to use. Getting Started puts this practice alongside weapon experimentation.
