Dark Souls III: Getting Started

Make Firelink Shrine your working base
Dark Souls III gives you Firelink Shrine early. Use it between areas to level, reinforce equipment, tune Estus, and speak to NPCs before their next move. Bonfires restore health, FP, and Estus, then warp you between every bonfire you have discovered. That freedom makes a hard route less intimidating: open one shortcut, return to the shrine, and begin the next run with a clear target.
Choose a weapon whose first few attacks make sense in your hands. Meet its requirements, reinforce it, and learn its reach before spending levels on a complicated stat plan. Switching to a two-handed grip opens the weapon’s two-handed move set and changes the Strength calculation for wielding it. A shield can save you during an unfamiliar fight, but a blocked hit still costs stamina, so leave enough to roll clear afterward.
Learn one enemy at a time
Do not attack until stamina is empty. Two safe hits followed by a retreat teach more than a full combo that leaves you trapped. Lock on for close duels, unlock when the camera becomes the real danger, and watch for a route that splits enemies apart. Most standard enemies return when you rest, while shortcuts and defeated bosses stay solved.
The base game has its own complete route. Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City add separate expansion areas and bosses, so do not assume a DLC guide is part of a first playthrough. For your next practical system, read Weapon Upgrades or use the Dark Souls III guide hub.
At Firelink’s bonfire, set your Estus allocation before a difficult run. Hand ashes to the Shrine Handmaid through dialogue, then reopen her shop to see the expanded stock; take coals to Andre separately for weapon services.
