What Moves the Dead
Alex Easton, a retired soldier, is summoned to Ruravia because Madeline Usher, a friend from childhood, is dying in the house she has never left.
About
What Moves the Dead is a horror novella by the American writer T. Kingfisher, published in 2022. It retells Edgar Allan Poe's story "The Fall of the House of Usher" and opens the Sworn Soldier series.
Word reaches Alex Easton, a retired soldier, that Madeline Usher, their childhood friend, is dying, and Easton travels to the Usher family home in the remote countryside of Ruravia. On the road Easton falls in with an American doctor heading the same way, and at the house they are joined by a visiting mycologist.
The house stands beside a dark, pulsing lake, and the land around it is wrong: fungus is spreading over everything, the wildlife is behaving strangely, and the local people keep their distance. Madeline sleepwalks and speaks in unfamiliar voices after dark, while her brother Roderick is in the grip of a mysterious illness of the nerves.
Easton and the two experts set about working out what is actually the matter with the House of Usher, treating the haunting as a problem to be examined rather than only feared. Kingfisher writes it as a scientific inquiry into a Gothic premise, in a short, self-contained book.
