To All the Boys I've Loved Before
Lara Jean Covey writes letters to the boys she has loved, and she never intended any of them to be read.
About
Jenny Han's To All the Boys I've Loved Before was released on 15 April 2014 by Simon & Schuster. Its narrator is Lara Jean Song Covey, sixteen, half-Korean American and growing up in Virginia in a household of three sisters: the older Margot, Lara Jean herself and the younger Kitty. Over the years Lara Jean has written letters to the boys she liked, five of them in all, and they are kept in a teal hatbox left to her by her mother, who died after a fall when Lara Jean was ten. The letters are addressed to Margot's boyfriend and next-door neighbour Josh Sanderson, to Kenny from camp, to Peter from seventh grade, to Lucas from homecoming, and to John Ambrose from model UN.
Margot is finishing school and moving to Scotland for university, and she ends things with Josh first; around the same time the letters stop being private, and each boy Lara Jean wrote to receives one. To deal with the person she minds most, she agrees to pretend that she is going out with one of the others, which means keeping up the story for her family, her friends and the whole school. Han has said that her own teenage habit of writing letters to boys she had crushes on was the starting point for the book.
Two sequels followed: P.S. I Still Love You (26 May 2015) and Always and Forever, Lara Jean (2 May 2017). Netflix released a film adaptation in 2018.
