Thief's Magic
In a country where an industrial revolution runs on magic, a student of archaeology finds a book that is awake and aware, and that has been gathering information for a very long time.
About
Thief's Magic is a fantasy novel by Trudi Canavan, published in 2014. It is told through two young people in different lands, and it is set in a world where an industrial revolution is powered by magic.
Tyen is a student of archaeology, and what he unearths is a sentient book called Vella, who was once a young sorcerer-bookbinder and was turned into a tool by one of the greatest sorcerers in history. Since then she has gone on collecting information, and among it is a clue to a disaster that Tyen's world is heading towards.
In a land ruled by priests, Rielle is a dyer's daughter who has been taught that to use magic is to steal from the Angels, and who knows that she has a talent for it anyway. There is a corrupter in her city who is willing to teach her, if she will accept the risk, and both she and Tyen are about to find that the nature of magic and the laws of their lands are not what they were raised to believe.
