The Woman Who Walked into Doors
Paula Spencer is thirty-nine and tells her own story: her childhood in Dublin, the courtship that turned into an eighteen-year marriage, the violence inside it, and the year her husband was shot by the Guards.
About
The Woman Who Walked into Doors is a novel by the Irish writer Roddy Doyle, published in 1996.
Paula Spencer speaks for herself from beginning to end. She is thirty-nine, her husband Charles is dead, shot by the Guards after leaving her, and she has children she is trying to hold on to. What she tells is the whole of her life so far: a childhood in Dublin with a father who drank, a courtship with a man she loved and married, and eighteen years in which the violence that began early became ordinary to her and to the people who could see it and said nothing. The title is what she said to explain the first bruise he gave her, and the admission of that excuse is the moment the novel keeps returning to. Doyle had worked on an earlier version of the story for television, and he writes the whole book in her own voice.
Doyle later returned to the same character in two more novels, published in 2006 and 2024.
