About
The Silent Patient is a psychological thriller by the British-Cypriot writer Alex Michaelides, published in 2019 and his first novel. It is narrated by a psychotherapist, Theo Faber.
Alicia Berenson is a painter in London whose apparently happy marriage ends one evening when her husband, a photographer, comes home late and she shoots him in the face, five times. She never explains why and never defends herself, and after the killing she stops speaking altogether.
Her silence turns her into a public mystery and sends her to the Grove, a secure psychiatric unit, where one therapist after another tries without success to get her to talk. Years later, Theo seeks a post at the Grove, and once he is taken on he arranges to take over her case.
Theo tries to reach Alicia through her own art, and his sessions with her gradually draw out the history that led to the killing. Michaelides worked for a time as a student in a psychiatric unit and sets much of the novel inside one, using the closed world of the hospital as the stage for the search.
