The Last Letter from Your Lover
Ellie, a journalist, is hunting through her newspaper's archive for a story when she finds a letter from 1960: a man asking a woman to leave her husband for him.
About
Jojo Moyes's The Last Letter from Your Lover, published in 2010, is told across two periods. In the mid-1960s, Jennifer Stirling is a wealthy socialite who loses her memory after a car crash, and she is unable to remember much of her life before it or to connect with her husband, Laurence. A letter she finds, addressed to "J" and signed "Boot", draws her into trying to recover what happened, and she follows the clues it offers about the man who wrote it.
In present-day London, the journalist Ellie Haworth has recently broken up with her long-time boyfriend and is writing an article about the paper's recently deceased editor. Working past the formal archivist, Rory, she finds a misfiled love letter, also addressed to someone identified only as "J", and begins to trace the affair it describes while her own private life is complicated by a relationship with a married man. The two strands alternate as Ellie works out how much a set of letters can really tell her about the people who wrote them.
The novel was adapted into a British romantic drama film directed by Augustine Frizzell and written by Nick Payne and Esta Spalding, starring Felicity Jones, Callum Turner, Joe Alwyn, Nabhaan Rizwan and Shailene Woodley. It was released on Netflix in select territories on 23 July 2021 and in the United Kingdom on 6 August 2021 by StudioCanal.
