The Ionian Mission
The Ionian Mission is the eighth of Patrick O'Brian's novels about Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, first published in 1981.
About
Patrick O'Brian published The Ionian Mission in 1981, and it is the eighth of the Aubrey-Maturin novels. The story belongs to the Napoleonic Wars, and it opens with the marriage of Dr Stephen Maturin to Diana Villiers.
Not long afterwards Captain Jack Aubrey takes HMS Worcester out on blockade duty off Toulon, a stretch of work that O'Brian describes in the detail his readers had come to expect: long weeks at sea, the management of a ship, and the politics of the fleet. The Worcester is then sent in for refitting, which leaves Aubrey without a command.
He is given HMS Surprise instead, and the mission of the title follows: Aubrey, Maturin and a Professor Graham are to go among the pashas along the coast of the Ionian Sea and try to detach a new ally from the fringes of the Turkish empire. Maturin's trip ashore on enemy territory is one of the set pieces of the book, and the whole of it is as much about the working of a ship as about the diplomacy.
