The Hacienda
Beatriz's father is executed and her home destroyed in the upheaval after the Mexican War of Independence, and when Don Rodolfo Solorzano proposes she accepts, ignoring what people say about his first wife's death, because his estate offers her a home.
About
The Hacienda is a novel by the American writer Isabel Cañas, published in 2022 and set in Mexico after the war of independence.
Beatriz marries for security rather than love, and she arrives at a house that is remote, half empty and staffed by people who will not meet her eyes. Rodolfo's sister Juana despises her, and the household has rules about which parts of the building are used and which are not. Beatriz is devout, practical and not inclined to believe in ghosts until she is kept awake by voices and by the sense of being watched, and by then she has nobody to ask. The novel brings in a young priest, himself under suspicion for his politics, and the two of them work out what happened in the house before she came to it.
It was the author's first novel, and it was written as a gothic story about a country and a family both recovering from a war, with the politics of the period kept in view.
