Strangers in Death
A prominent businessman is found in his Park Avenue apartment, tied to the bed and strangled with cords of black velvet, and the manner of his death makes the case a talking point for the whole city.
About
Strangers in Death is a crime novel by the American writer Nora Roberts, writing as J. D. Robb, published in 2008. It is one of the In Death books, set in New York in the middle of the twenty-first century, and narrated by Lieutenant Eve Dallas of the city's police department.
Thomas Anders is a wealthy businessman whose death is discovered in his own apartment. The details make it a public sensation and an embarrassment to his family, and the people closest to him are noticeably unwilling to discuss any of it, which leaves Dallas working through a household of people who all have something to protect.
Her access to the case is helped by her husband, Roarke, whose property holdings include the building where Anders's sporting goods company has its headquarters, and she uses it. The difficulty is that the evidence does not support the obvious explanations: the victim does not appear to have struggled, the security arrangements in the apartment suggest somebody who was known to the family was there, and every alibi she checks holds up. The book is as much about the city's reaction to a death as about the death itself.
