Spin
One October night the stars go out: a black membrane has been placed around the Earth, and time inside it now runs millions of times faster than time outside.
About
Spin is a science fiction novel by the American-Canadian writer Robert Charles Wilson, published in 2005. It won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2006 and is the first book of a trilogy, followed by Axis and Vortex.
The story begins when Tyler Dupree is twelve. He and his mother live in a guest house on the estate of the aerospace millionaire E. D. Lawton, and he spends his time with Lawton's twins, Jason and Diane. One night the three of them watch every star in the sky flare and vanish behind a flat black barrier, an event that becomes known as the Big Blackout.
The membrane, or spin, slows time inside it so that years pass outside for every second within, which means the Earth has only a few subjective decades before the Sun's expansion reaches it. Satellites fall out of orbit, recovered hardware comes back pitted as though it were far older than it is, and a simulated star keeps ordinary life going. Jason becomes a scientist obsessed with the membrane, and Tyler narrates what happens to all three of them.
