Sojourn
Drizzt Do'Urden has spent more than forty years in the Underdark and comes to the conclusion that neither he nor anyone near him will be safe while he stays there.
About
Sojourn is a fantasy novel by the American writer R. A. Salvatore, published in 1991. It is the third book of The Dark Elf Trilogy.
After more than forty years in the Underdark, Drizzt Do'Urden decides that he and everyone around him would be safer if he left, and he travels up to the surface. What he finds there is hostility from nearly everyone he meets, because of the race he belongs to, and very little of the reception he might have hoped for.
His years on the surface are where he finds his calling: he becomes a ranger, largely through the example of a blind ranger named Montolio, and the later part of the book follows what he makes of that life. In time he settles in Icewind Dale and takes up with Catti-brie, Bruenor Battlehammer, Regis the halfling and the barbarian Wulfgar. This is the last of the three books about his early life, and it is the bridge between the first two, which are set in the Underdark, and the adventures that came after them.
